Anyone having iTunes issues?

Post by sugarcels »

Mine has suddenly decided to stop loading at all.

I am not getting any kind of error message. It simply refuses to load. I click and click on the desktop icon, and I see the little hourglass for a few seconds, then nothing happens.

It was working fine (always has) until yesterday, and out of the blue it decided to poop out on me. I didn't do anything out of the ordinary, that I know of, to cause this. Tried the following things:

-Restarted computer
-Uninstalled and reinstalled about 4 times
-Installed iTunes 8, repeat above step
-Deleted "itunes.exe" in Task Manager
-Ran my virus scanner - nothing

I've googled and looked everywhere I can think of, nothing is working. I'm feeling kinda desperate. Is anyone else having this problem? If it matters, I use Windows XP.

I just tried using it after reading your post and it worked fine. I had to update it a couple days ago which requires me to delete the old quick launch icon and create a new one. Otherwise I get what you described. That's really weird since you've installed it again. :?

Hmmm, nobody else I've asked has this problem, either. Strange - guess I'm the only one :l I hope it's able to fix itself, because I'm at a loss.

Yep, it's the Windows version. I hadn't installed anything new before it stopped working. It simply stopped.

To be sure you got rid of the old copy completely, make sure you:

1. Uninstall old version
2. Remove any remaining files (find it in your program files folder and remove the entire folder!)
3. Restart your computer
4. Re-install

If you don't do this, uninstalls and re-installs may call up old files that are still present, thus thwarting your efforts. Also, remove ALL old shortcuts to it and let the re-install re-create them.

You may also need to find out what (if any) shared files it adds in various other folders and/or registry entries that it fails to remove upon uninstall (a Google search might help with this). Any of these things could be responsible for your problem. I'd also recommend you run the DiskCleanup wizard built into every Windows system and remove any/all temporary files.

I'm not personally familiar with the iTunes software, as I don't use it myself, but these are just some basic best-practices when attempting to uninstall and re-install software on a Windows system. ;)

2nd on what Zerospace said.

Usually I find if anything is wrong with Itunes, just to completely remove it from the system and reinstall.

I'll see if this works, thanks :) Really hope so! I also did a computer defragment last night and deleted some temporary files - that didn't seem to help, though :/

Hmm. Tried the steps, and it didn't help at all. Even uninstalled a codec I recently downloaded. NOTHING is working *mashes hands to head* It just won't open!

A quick google search for me shows that other folks have had the same thing happen after various updates of their iTunes software.

You may need to check your security software (especially if you have a software firewall -- including the Windows firewall) to make sure it is allowing iTunes to run correctly. An update can mess everything up.

You may also want to read this--as it seems it is rather difficult to actually remove all traces of iTunes:

Hmmm, that's really odd, especially considering that you've restarted it. Truthfully, I clear up about 95% of my computer problems by restarting the darn thing . . .

Have you tried ending the process? That would just be a temporary fix, and I don't know if it'll even work, but I've found sometimes that if a program isn't loading properly, I can end the process, and then it will start when I click on the icon.

Here's how you do it:

1. Attempt to start iTunes.
2. If it doesn't start up, access your Task Manager (hit "Ctrl" "Alt" and "Delete" at the same time).
3. Click over to "Processes"
4. Find and highlight the one labeled "iTunes.exe" and then click "End Process" (you'll probably get some sort of warning, click "ok")
5. Attempt to start iTunes again. It should start up now.

I'm not entirely sure that will work for you, but it's worth a shot. Even if it works, that's just a temporary fix that you'll have to preform every time you want to use iTunes.

^ Yep, the Task box is one of the first things I tried.

And I don't know how or why, but it seems to have fixed itself. I won't question it and hope it stays working... at least until I exit out or restart the computer *worry worry* :P

Thanks to everyone for their help!

Just so you guys understand, ending the process only terminates the running program from the system memory... it won't solve the greater problem, if there is one. However, if the program is somehow already running and encounters a problem and doesn't close, terminating it using the task manager is often the best way to get the ball rolling again. A restart will clear this, however, so if you've restarted and that hasn't fixed it, terminating a running program using task manager isn't likely to fix the problem ;).

Glad to hear it's resolved! Hopefully that'll be the end of that for a very long time ;)
