Sensei's Pre-Halloween Update: CCS and Miyu (nice!)

Post by sensei »

In between school business and visiting my wife who's recovering quickly from knee surgery, I've managed to get together a small but extremely nice update. The main beneficiary (as last time) is Cardcaptor Sakura: new items include:More directly appropriate to Halloween are two excellent additions to my small but much-loved Vampire Princess Miyu gallery: The gallery has gone through its usual October make-over, with more sombre colors and a banner based on my wife's knee replacement incision, which makes her the toast of the rehab. center now, so much so that she half wishes she could keep the staples for Halloween. (Alas, they're starting to itch a little as the joint heals, and so they will all come out next Thursday.)

The Quirky Gallery Tour will also get refurbished sometime next week. Meantime, give the new arrivals a warm welcome!

Great update Sensei! I saw the picture of your wifes' knee and I became a bit squimish ^_^;;; Excellent for a frankenstein style halloween page though! I'm happy that I can finally read through all your CCS indepth explinations without fear of spoilers (we finished the series about a week ago)

Gorgeous Miyu cels, sensei! Your Miyu section may be "small" as you say, but it certainly doesn't lack anything in quality. I love the wind-blown Miyu cel, especially. The image is incredibly intense--both in color and her expression.

On a side note: My other half is an avid Miyu collector, and he was surprised to see that you have a Miyu section ;).

Beautiful update! And aside from being absolutely lovely, the windblown Miyu is quite interesting. I have a cel with a fair amount of paint on the front, the majority of which, like yours, depicts shadows - but I've always assumed that this was correction paint, applied after the realization that a desired effect had not been achieved. Is the technique in fact used for artistic - as well as pragmatic - purposes?

Thanks all for visiting and bearing with the Frankenstein knee. Actually, my wife has named it "Polly Patella" (because the bottom of the new joint is a polyurethane buffer with a lifetime guarantee). The other knee, which now creaks and groans pitifully as she goes through therapy, is "Molly Patella," and probably will undergo the same procedure next spring.

I do too: they can be both riveting and wonderfully engaging. The animators really were able to make her look both cute and immensely strong at the right times.

Sakura in the prince costume is also gorgeous.
I was really taken by both of these when they came up FA and lucky that I was able to slip in and get them without a fuss. The Sakura particularly came up along with several other nice CCS cels that involved quite a bit of Rinkya/SMJ competition, so I was lucky to slip off with this one undetected out of the middle of the sharkfest.

That douga really is pretty. I thought about giving it its own page, as it shows more of the scene than the cel, and the cel as cropped as planned shows still less.

I envy you! Watching through CCS for the first time was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life. I remember thinking, "It's going to turn mushy, they can't sustain the mood, sooner or later it will get repetitive. And it never did: it continued to surprise me all the way to the final credits. I can't say that about many classic novels.
Kero-zilla makes me laugh. hehehehe
I love that image; just wish the cel were in better physical shape, though.

I was a little surprised, too -- until I realized that Toshihiro Hirano, (the husband of Narumi Kakinouchi, creator of the VPM manga and animation director for the OAV) also directed both the Magic Knight Rayearth TV and OAV series. I've never seen a Rayearth cel that was less than beautiful, and so I guess it was inevitable that I'd be drawn to Miyu cels in the same way.

I don't know, except that in this case the result is really very effective. It could be that the artist started by correcting a problem, then, perhaps with studio permission, went ahead and made the cel more artistically arresting. Without the sketches (particularly the douga) it would be hard to tell. I do know that Tree of Palme cels used colored trace lines in somewhat the same way to create effects that simply wouldn't have been possible with the "paint-by-numbers" process by which most cels were created.

Thanks all for visiting! Vampire Princess Miyu Roorock!

I've seen cels intentionally painted on top before. The castle in this one is painted on top of a cel layer:

A lot of times backgrounds will be painted on the front of cel sheets, especially in book set-ups. This is the first time I've seen a facial portrait done partly on the front, partly on the back, though. It would be interesting to see if this was something planned by the studio this way.

Let me know when you're going to stop by. I might want to be rattling a few doorknobs over at your house at the same time. :D

Thank you! I sometimes wish Kero could go into this supersized-mode as well as into his "griffon" true form.

Thank you too! And also thanks for looking at the OVA Miyu. Even with the shut eyes and the paint peel, it's still a wonderfully evocative image. I hope I can snag a few more cels from this version of the show.

Alright, I'm don't have the time but I'm going to have to check out this Vampire Princess Miyu. Your cels from it are just gorgeous. I hope your wife's knee heals well! My mom had knee surgery last X-Mas but her stitches weren't nearly as bad. And don't say the word patella, lol, I'm sick of studying for the anatomy quiz in figure drawing last week!
