should I display my graveyard?

Post by graymouser »

I know this question has been asked before, but it has been some time.

I have a graveyard that is private the vast majority of the time, but its kind of a pain to keep deleting the link every time I update my gallery. It would save me some time if I could just leave it.

The problem is that I keep track of who I sent the items to on that page. It does not show the amounts paid, but it does give full names. The names are only briefly seen if you have a slow internet connection. If your connection is fast they will probably flash past the screen too fast to read.

I could erase the names before putting the graveyard up, but that's a lot of work since there are currently 95 items in the graveyard. In fact, if I have to go this route it may be more work to edit it than it is to keep on deleting the link.

Allowing handles/usernames would be ok. Its nice to see where stuff comes from and where it is going...

Personally I don't have a problem with my first name being known, but my last name is something I try to keep a bit more quiet outside of dvd reviews.
Seeing as how I've benefited from your generosity a few times :) I'd be quite ok with my handle and/or first name being used if you were to make the graveyard public.

While I think this info is interesting to real specialists (in the same way that it's interesting to see who previously owned a given Van Gogh painting), I don't feel that it needs to be part of a public gallery. For that reason, when I trade or cel something from my collection, I immediately delete that entire page, though of course I keep my own private records of when and where it went.

On the other hand, when I get a cel as a gift or through a gallery offer/trade, I nearly always post a link to the source's gallery with a "thanks to" message. That doesn't publicize the source's last name or email, but it does make a little bit of history available.

I guess I feel that if I no longer physically own an artwork, I probably shouldn't be displaying a scan of it. But I don't feel this strongly enough to object if someone else does, in the interest of making collecting history more visible.

Just my 500 yen.

I have a private graveyard... Most of it I deleted already since it was an upkeep that I didn't want to do and I didn't feel making it public was ok. Initially I had it public because I like the thought that I used to own those cels.... But now I feel like it's up to the new owner to decide if he or she wants to show it. Also I don't want to bother both ourselves in case I do put up a "will take down at request" clause because 1) the person may never see it and so doesn't request 2) there is a possibility of causing another person some grief (either because they might feel silly/unreasonable for asking to take it down or it will take up their time). So... I'm voting no.

^ I agree completely. I'm inclined to think that it is the right of the new owner to decide whether or not they want their cel displayed publicly on someone else's site - and unfortunately, you might inadvertently make them feel petty if you ask for permission and they don't really want to give it. When I sell something that had been visible in my gallery, I simply hide it...which gives me a personal visual record, without the bragging rights.

Well it looks like most people feel that they should stay hidden.

No problems, just thought I would check.

I kind of wanted to vote for both nos. X| I don't care what collectors used to own. I only care about what they do own. I know you're not on RS but they actually have a rule of not displaying art you don't actually have. I like that rule globally. I used to keep a folder of sold items on my HD but I've recently purged it. It doesn't bother me one bit that it's gone. In fact, I feel much better about it in general. :)

Also, I'm one of those people who will harass you to take a cel down from your gallery if you've sold one to me. It doesn't feel special to me if it's in both of our galleries. Yeah, there's something cool about knowing the history of who owned the cel before you but I've realized the reality is I'm never going to know all the hands that have touched it. I frequently will buy cels and not display them for months even years so that people will forget about online sales or auctions. I don't want people making notes about what I paid for something. I still have a friend who won't display a certain Sailor Moon cel she purchased 4 years ago because I was asked if I knew who bought it. My friend just doesn't want to be hassled so it will probably forever remain hidden.

Sorry for such a long post about this. It's your decision if you choose to have a graveyard section or not. But I'm just letting you know that if I was one of your buyers I would frequently email you until said cel was removed. Most people are good about it if you ask nicely but others . . . let's just say not so much.

I'm pretty laissez-faire about gallery display preferences, so a graveyard section doesn't bother me. I have one myself. But displaying names is another issue altogether. In order to protect the privacy of individuals, I would not recommend publicly displaying names. That kind of information is better saved for private records.

My view is that, if you don't own it, it's no longer appropriate for you to display it. But I'm not militant about the issue.

In general, I don't have any interest in graveyards in any cel gallery. I prefer to focus on what the gallery owner owns and displays a passion for. That is generally the reason I visit a gallery and what makes a gallery visit enjoyable for me.

However, in the case of private cel transactions between collectors, I do feel strongly that it is wrong to post names or even handles/usernames without the permission of the person affected.

I have all my sold/traded items hidden. I don't want them to keep showing up on my top 50. X|

Ok so there are more reasons than that, but mostly because they aren't mine anymore.

I guess that it's a good idea (but if you put a giant SOLD on the cel itself and link to the new gallery)
Because there are some pieces that I know where they are one day, and they disappear the next,it would be nice to know where they go ^_^

Am i the only one who doesn't even have a private graveyard?

To be honest, when i sell a cel (not that i sell that many anymore) i only keep scans and other transaction details of the new owner until i'm completely sure that he/she has received the cel and there's no problem with the transaction.

Personally i'm completely against public graveyards.

Also, not that is related, but i'm also against abandoned galleries. Rubberslug has many of these. And when i say abandoned i don't mean galleries that aren't updated, i mean galleries where the owner has moved to a new site leaving old site "abandoned". While this doesn't affect many sites, it has a big impact on rubberslug because sites are listed and there's a search option. Frequently this abandoned site displays cels that don't belong to that person anymore. There's an easy option to "close" a gallery leaving it out of display for a reason.

Nope, you're not. ;) I don't either. When I decide to sell something, I'm selling it because I no longer want it, so keeping track of where it goes doesn't interest me.

I have only ever sold one cel that I regret selling ... and that's probably the only cel I've sold that I know exactly where it is. *laughs*

This is the first time I've heard a "sold" section called a "graveyard". Lol.

One year in this hobby, still learning the lingo....

I don't see the point in displaying sold cels. Keeping private records makes more sense to me.
