More Naruto woes

Post by duotrouble »

I'm usually behind the times on this sort of thing but I'm curious how everyone feels about what TV Tokyo is going to do with Naruto Shippuuden.

Naruto Shippuuden news

I know I won't be paying the fee to watch it an hour later. I'll probably continue to watch it on crunchy roll but I'm not sure. I really hate streaming video. Yeah, I'm not sure. :?

I understand. Is there anything I can say to help you make up your mind?

2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

I saw the articles back when they came out, and while I think it's fantastic that the legal companies are going to distribute the show in a near-real time manner, subbed no less, I don't like streaming video that much either. :P Maybe it's the collector in me that likes to horde an actual file. Especially on those off chances the internet goes out or I'm traveling and can put it on my ipod to watch. I'll probably opt for the week delayed version for free.

I'll go ahead and mention it. I read about this on DB's site. In January, they will no longer be able to fansub Shippuuden. They don't want to get into legal troubles, which is what would happen if they continued.

I don't always watch my anime on my PC either. I'm in a habit of transferring files on to my PSP. That thing goes with me everywhere. It's about the only reason I've been able to catch up on anime I've been wanting to watch for like forever. If crunchy roll gets too annoying, I may just wait for them to be released on DVD in the US. If I need to know the story, I always have scanlations to keep me going.

While I dislike streaming video, I think it's nice that they (the copyright holders) finally got their heads on straight and realized that there are a lot of English-speaking fans who aren't willing to wait months (if not years) for certain series to come out on DVD from their US copyright holders, just to see "new" episodes. I feel like this is a huge concession on their part. I definitely won't be paying any money, but I bet some die-hard fans will!

I'm kind of disappointed. I like having the actual files because I never know when or where I can watch them. At least if I have them, I can put them on my ipod or PSP and take them on road trips. I'm just not sure if I'll be able to watch them online at all. I never have time to watch TV as it is.

The nice thing with technology is that whenever a barrier is put in place, someone will come up with a way to overcome that barrier...as long as there is a market for it.

Which means that I can't really see this as being a problem

Someone will likely subscribe and then post said material on other sites within a few hours. Or another subbing company will come along, take the raw and then make their own sub.

And if that doesn't happen, I honestly don't mind waiting a week or so to see a new episode of Naruto. One week wait is a lot faster than the wait to see it on Cartoon Network(and then, it'll be chock full of 'Believe its').

But cutiebunny, that's the point. No one can fansub it now without legal troubles. I'm not saying I want anyone to fansub it since I am actually happy the companies are realizing there are fans everywhere. I'm just saying that alternative will have to be a back alley route only - totally underground.

Waiting the week won't be a problem because we do that now anyway. As new episodes of any series anime or not air, there's always a week wait for the next episode.

Well, I do think it's great that the production companies are seeing the need for getting anime to U.S. fans in a timely manner. I'll wait the week. That's not a big deal. It is kind of a bummer not to have the torrents available for download though. I'm not a big fan of watching anime on streaming sites, and prefer to download the torrents myself. But normally I do buy the DVD's anyways for my favorite shows.

My concern is more on the censoring line. Let's face it - Shippuden is a bit more mature, which is fine by me. I'd just hate for them to censor naruto's occasional potty mouth.

Ah...I see. So that's why you've been watching more than the usual amount of anime lately. :)

:crackup I have a usual amount? :nya: Yeah, I've been making a good dent lately.

lcatino, you won't have to worry about censorship if it's going straight to DVD. DVDs have different censor rules than tv. As long as the box adequately warns you, you can put pretty much anything on a DVD.

As the internet and computers get faster and faster, fansubs become more of a problem. I've always thought that the only solution would have to be a streaming site, though in my vision, it was free, since it was paid for by advertising.

While a lot of fans here may actually buy the DVDs when they come out, there are still quite a few out there who don't, simply because they can get a permanent copy for free. The vast majority of US anime profits come from DVDs (after all, barely anything makes it onto TV anymore), so they kind of need to force the average anime watcher's hand.

I guess it's just a good thing that Japanese companies are finally doing something to combat the quick and free aspect of fansubbing. There are some things I'd do differently, of course, but it's a start.

Though, if any of the shows I watch did something similar, I'd have to find a different computer to watch them on. Mine can barely handle 5 minute segments on YouTube . . . I'd hate having to stream an entire episode. X|

Well it beats biking three miles and back to rent a copied untranslated Japanese tape with two TV episodes on it when I couldn't even understand one Japanese word out of forty that I heard. I rented them so that I could watch anime eight months to year before they were fansubbed. :)

But I'm curious to see how this "delivery" system will evolve.
