Sure, and your child can borrow it to finally blow away his classmates that where picking on him at school!

Ah ok, so you are completely unknowledgeable on the subject. Thank you for your input.

Then please spare me the insult of saying my kid will be taking one of my guns to school to kill classmates.

If you are afraid then take a class. People are afraid of what they don't know.

Stun gun: Getting as close as possible to your attacker. Do you really want to do this? If they have a thick coat on do you really want to find out your stun gun doesn't work when you are face to face? A lot of people die a year from stun guns, it is not an absolutely non-lethal alternative. To use a stun gun properly you need hand to hand combat training and stun gun training as usning it improperly has a good chance of killing the recipient.

Pepper spray: Hope you are not too close or the wind is blowing the wrong way as you may just end up making yourself an easier victim. I had a guy accidentally blast himself in the chest a few days ago with pepper spray. It affected people 2 feet away and completely blinded him.

Whatever you choose is your choice for personal protection. All have advantages and disadvantages. It's important to know both before trusting your life to one.

For your personal belongings, I still recommend a browning safe. :D

I was talking in general, but I guess you, once again, were incapable of noticing that and felt personally attacked. I applaud your constant display of openness to other people's opinions.

I'm glad I live in a country where no one is allowed to own a gun. Incidents with guns are rare in my country.
Therefore I think it's disturbing when people talk about buying a gun as if they are going to buy a new pair of shoes, especially when it is done in the context we are speaking of here.

Feel free to retort with an extremely witty and "knowledgeable" remark which I could give a rat's ass about, I won't be reading it.

I could go out and find all the statistics, reports, and information that make all of your comments false and post them up here. But you don't care so it would be useless.

What I can tell you is that I have done extensive research on this subject and found that being afraid of a gun is baseless. The only people who say that guns in general are bad are either uninformed, or just following what the anti gun people say without doing the research on their own, as 90% of anti gun statistics have been proven wrong.

But I'm sure you will not be reading this, and I'm sure you will continue with the uninformed kneejerk reaction of every gun equals a child on a killing spree mentality.

And yes I took your comment personally. I own guns, and I have a child. your comment was a definitive: own gun + child = killing spree. If I said all women are idiots, would it then be fair of me to defend myself saying "I wasn't addressing you directly"?

We have a security system and we live very nice area so I am not too worried. But this is my worst fear!

We have katanas but we have them because we practice for kenjutsu not for security. I am pretty sure that if someone gets into our place I would be punic and it would be useless anyway ;) :P

Yikes Amy! Sorry to hear about the recent neighborhood break-ins.

I don't think you can really be 100% protected from potential break-ins, but I guess it helps to be aware of what's going on in your neighborhood, and keep doors/windows locked when your not home. Yeah, having a security system is a good idea too.

Where I grew up, we had an alarm system, pretty secure windows, and yes - my dad's rifles, though I had no clue how to use them as an adult, and my bedroom was on the second floor, so I felt really safe. My neighbor was broken into, but it didn't scare me.

Then when we moved to where I live now, and for whatever reason, I'm really scared of getting broken into. And it's not a bad neighborhood by any means. I think because my bedroom is on the ground level, and the windows could be more secure. :hurt: Thankfully I do have an alarm system, but to be honest, I have dreams frequently about someone breaking in while I'm here, and I know I wouldn't be able to do much to defend myself. I've tossed around the idea of learning to use a gun, but haven't pursued it. And a dog is out of the question - allergies.

I still think being aware of anything suspicious in your neighborhood could help prevent a crime, and definitely get a safe to store valuables.

Right. You live in a country that is simply one of the biggest distribution gateways for cocaine, heroin, and hash. You also live in the country which produces more ecstacy than anyone else. Oh, and let's not forget one of the biggest money laundering capitals in the world. But you are right, you have very few guns and very low crime rates. I guess your country prefers to export crime rather than import it. So please, remain self-righteous. Your country is fueling violence and terror around the world through the drug trade! But at least you don't have guns.

I've been to your country, and I had a wonderful time. You want to make this about nationalism, go right ahead. Just reazlize that while your home is great, it has it has more than its share of problems and skeletons in the closet. When it comes to guns, you WERE speaking out of ignorance. Get over it. Taking away gun rights does not ensure tranquility. They tried it in Germany, 1938. Didn't turn out all that well if my history is correct.

Ooh, one more suggestion. Mental warfare.

Get a food bowl and a good heavy chain. Put the food bowl on the back porch, attach the heavy chain to the back of the house. Get a couple chewed toys from people who have dogs and toss them in the yard in the same area as the chain.

Get some NRA member stickers and put them in a couple of the promenant windows. Also get a security system sign and put it in the front yard.

The perceived notion of a big dog owning NRA member with a security system is a good cheap deterrant.

I realize that this might be somewhat off-topic...

Ryouko wrote:I am deathy afraid of guns, so there's no way I would ever own one.
I used to think the same way too. My father was a law enforcement officer and he carried a gun with him at all times. When he was at home, he placed it in his closet. Even so, I was very afraid to go near it as a child because I feared its destructive power. When I went to law enforcement academy, I had to overcome that fear of the weapon. Today, though, I have a great respect for it and all weapons, including my most favorite to shoot...a shotgun with some nice slugs in it. Yes, I realize that the autos are much more destructive, but I do love the kick of a good shotgun.

I would really like to look into getting a stun gun though, if they are legal. But I WILL be always sure to have my pepper spray. ;)
Have you experienced what it is like to be sprayed with pepper spray? If not, I would suggest that you experience it - it's not as effective as you believe it to be. In order to receive certification for weapon carry, all US law enforcement officers are required to experience a weapon(being shot at is the only exception). So, from personal experience, I can tell you that pepper spray is not very effective. Even if you spray a person who is less than a foot away, that person can still see, run about, etc. During my simulation with pepper spray, the tester hit me in the mouth with it. It was somewhat unpleasant to breathe, but I was able to run around the car, leap onto the hood and shoot the tester five times in gut with a paint gun. So, please, don't rely on pepper spray.

Additionally, many hardened criminals train with pepper spray. They spray their criminal friends and they build resistance to it.

I would suggest that, if you really feel the need to get a weapon, carry a knife and receive proper training in fighting with said knife. Unlike guns, you don't have to worry about reloading a knife. Additionally, it will take 21 feet for you to pull out a gun and fire if your attacker charges at you with a knife.

I agree. Pepper spray is a great way to piss off a robber, but not stop him. I used to use pepper spray to season steak on campouts.

Fear of guns is natural, and well founded. They are a dangerous implement. However, as with all fears, knowledge and training is the best way to overcome them. A gun in the hand of a well trained individual is safer than pepper spray or a stun gun in the purse of a frightened woman.

By now you do not do use pepper spray to season steak on campouts anymore?
