With a A-Kon update email, this was included...
My name is Sarah Kornfield, and I am a graduate student at Texas A&M University, working on my thesis project. My research is focused on shojo manga/anime, and I'm particularly interested in the heroine's role and shojo's popularity within the American market. The purpose of my research is to survey audience responses to shojo: to understand the audience's reactions to and perceptions of sho-jo. I am particularly interested in knowing if audience members identify with and develop relationships with the heroine in these narratives.
I'm interested in learning how shojo fans understand the genre. Please complete a brief survey (approximately 20 minutes), see link below, providing your experience with sho-jo manga/anime and your opinion of the genre and the heroines.
This survey is anonymous – there is no way to link your responses to you.
By participating in this survey you would be contributing to the media scholarship on Shojo and our understanding of the genre. Please click on the link below (or copy the link into your browser) to access this survey:

I did participate and it does take about 15-20 minutes. At the end it asked to share with others so I am.

I said something similar...something about watching because of the male characters, artwork, and storyline.duotrouble wrote:That's too funny. I just finished mine and thought about posting it here.
Great minds.

Oh and I have to add what my final comment was.I wrote "I read/watch shojo for the bishies, not the female leads." Personally, I usually hate the female leads. They are typically too annoying for me.

It was an interesting survey.
Yeah...characterwise:
1. Usually when I'm enjoying a shoujo anime, it's because I find the female characters to be likeable, respectable, amusing or sympathetic.
2. But usually when I'm enjoying a shounen/seinen anime, it's because I find the female characters to be likeable, attractive or I can empathize with their storyline.
There's a bit of a difference.

I had a hard time taking it. Much of it assumes that you watch current American television, which I don't. Also, within the survey, they didn't define what they meant by shojou! Well, I did like taking it and I'm sure I stretched "shojou" to the limits in addressing my current favorite characters!
So, in terms of statistics, am I an outlier in that I really only keep up with anime as far as "current" television is concerned? I never thought about it - what does everyone else do?
