Sensei’s Excellent Update: GGGnK,Grimm, Tutu, MKR, TnN

After about a week of little bits of work, snatched from between classes, papers being graded, and other chores, I’ve gotten up all the pieces of my February update. Given my glide down into retirement, there will probably never be a complicated update like this in my gallery ever again, though I certainly intend to add little treasures from time to time and continue with features to keep it fresh and interesting to browse through.

Speaking of which, the Quirky Gallery Tour has been renewed, now focusing on the surprisingly diverse animation styles that went into Creating Inuyasha. I’ve selected a layout or rough genga from each episode that I have art for, and added notes (thanks to an interesting page from the website “Rumic Artâ€

Because even though all the scans and all the info I'd written up said "Fuu," I tried to upload them after a long day at work followed by a five hour drive down to Cephiro. Sorry. I think I got all of them corrected now, including the list above and the blog.

Great updates sensei! You should call it sensei's cel museum, I like the way you have researched and curated the artworks. Most ppl tend to value rough sketches less but you've added a different aspect to that. Thanks for the info on Kitaro, he has a striking appearance and I've always wondered what that anime was about

Thanks, everyone, for visiting and looking through both the crowdpleasers and the oddballs. While I'm certainly planning on staying in the game, I expect that big updates like this will be uncommon in the future. But for now, it's enjoyable work to put all the pieces together.

Thanks, Rei and Cordelia. The Rayearth OVA is so campy that in some ways I've learned to enjoy it more than the TV series. Oh, forget the plot, just get those monster/mechas activated and stomp all over Tokyo! The part where Fuu and Windam wreck the Tokyo Dome (with Ferio and a swarm of mechanical termites helping manfully) is one of my favorite moments. The bg actually moves in a bank behind Fuu, which I'd guess was more effective than having her just run in place in front of a stationary painted background.

That TV MKR Fuu was one that caught my eye at once on Anicyo, and I was delighted to get it at a very moderate price. What really impressed me was that I could see from the scan that it had minimal line fading, which is almost always a problem with the paint used for Fuu's hair and outfit. I thought it might be from the series conclusion (her looking at Ferio and thanking him for promising to help her wreck Tokyo Dome and the entire surrounding prefecture in the upcoming OVA), but when I reviewed that scene she's facing the other way. So I'll need to look for other scenes when she combines with Windam and add context later on.

Thanks, kathpatty, for giving this a look. That's another MKR Anicyo cel that stopped me in my tracks, just for visual appeal. Again, I thought I knew exactly where this Emeraude came in (her confession to the Knights at the end of the first season), but all of these were 3/4 portraits, not dead-on face shots like this. So I'm going to have to start cranking through the whole MKR series and find this amazing image.

Thanks, both of you, for looking at the Kitaro additions! It really surprised me to learn that there was a really major series out there, with a fairly good supply of cels and sketches reasonably available, that had such a strong link to my academic interest of folklore. I actually learned about this series while writing a review of a new scholarly book on Japanese folklore research. The characters really are engaging, especially the Keroesque magical mentor who consists just of an eyeball and a little naked body.

And I enjoyed the new IY quirky tour as well!

Thank you, lcatino! That was something I fitted together as I was waiting for the last lots to come in the mail. It's really surprising how totally different are the the attitudes that these layouts express, all the way from "Aw dang it how many more of these flipping cuts are there gonna be in this episode" to "Loveliness begins with the very first stroke of the pencil on paper."

Thanks for the support, Blaster and Cordelia. In truth, I've learned a lot from the really serious curators in RS and Beta (one reason I find those Open Houses really really important). My academic career has made me realize that something really well done often doesn't get noticed right away, even though its quality is obvious at a glance. Audiences often need to be introduced and given hints about where to look and how to look. And then, once there are educated perspectives, the work gets the recognition it deserves. But it takes both sides: someone to point and someone willing to take the time and energy to try to see.

It was nice to see some artwork from Grimm Masterpiece Theatre. I remember watching the dubbed version on Nick when I was a little kid and absolutely loved how detailed the characters were. At the time, there wasn't much in American animation that was appealing, which is probably why I enjoyed the dubbed version quite a bit.

Thank you, cutiebunny! As a folklorist, this is a natural one for me to love, and some of the adaptations are really quite interesting, much more so than Disney. My daughter cut her anime teeth on Nick Toons, which for a time was nearly all classic 80s Japanese anime: Noozles, Mysterious Cities of Gold, Belle and Sebastian, Maya the Bee, etc.

Heh. I was wondering if all the Tennimon lovers had somehow left Beta all together in a Snit [new hybrid car made by Kia]. Thank you: I'm glad there's at least us yet. While not a "big moment" in TnN, Chibi-Natsumi is awfully cute and I was pleasantly surprised with the "replacement background" effect I got with just two sheets of art paper.

Thanks, Gonzai. That was one that impressed me as well. The person who drew it obviously knew something about the anatomy of bare legs, as the modeling of these really is 3-dimensional. The arm sticking out on the right could easily look like a pigtail coming out of Kitaro's head, and it took quite a bit of skill to make this look right, too.

I'll add some more Kitaro sketches in time for Mardi Gras! (Also a couple of very nice Tree of Palme cels.)
