It was the "one-shot" part that cinched it for me!

Sorry, no, JWR and Miz Ducky.

Those are both animes that feature rings, but I think theyâ€™re based on manga, rather than novels.
Though this series was first serialized in a magazine.

And I bet there probably are some Naruto novels nowâ€¦

And I was thinking of doing Kuroshitsujiâ€¦

Butâ€¦ I decided instead to go with this brutal, yet beautiful, two part OVA Sci-fi depiction of driven, dysfunctional relationshipsâ€¦in a dystopian future.
