Anyone know what this stuff is and where to find it?

For the n00bs of cel collecting and production art . . . and for some of us old-timers, too. Post your questions on anything that puzzles you.

Anyone know what this stuff is and where to find it?

Post by MidniteKitten »

So I have some questions. What are the cel sketches drawn on? Obviously paper but it seems different then regular computer paper so I'm curious if anyone knows what it is and where you can get it? Also where can you find a hole punch that punches "registration" holes? As well as a peg bar that works with these holes? Why you may ask? Well that's a partial secret but lets just say I'm interested in getting my artwork moving ;) any help is much appreciated!

Well, Its drawn on onion paper most of the time for american animation I think. The paper can be expensive and usually come pre-punched. I purchased some paper from here: http://www.chromacolour.com

They are based in canada and ship world wide.

The hole punch itself costs....thousands of dollars. The peg bar, around $20 and the paper i purchased at the time $60. Prices have gone up since then I'm sure.

I wanted to animate a project a year ago and it would have cost me around $200 for 10 seconds.... needless to say photoshop helped with that LOL.

Good luck with your project!

A company called fanboys carries animation paper. I don't see much difference from smooth sketch book paper expect for the peg holes. So I do believe the pages are hole punched to begin with. I have no idea whatsoever were you can get a peg bar. :? I know my local Utrect store has animation paper.

Onion paper? What an odd name, you said it was used for American animation but I don't have any American animation sketches so I can't really compare them to the Japanese sketches. As for the hole punch I had no idea they could cost so much! I may just use a regular hole punch in that case and make my own peg bar from a modified key holder :/ thanks a lot for the info and the site though chibikitty!

And penguinton I notice a huge difference in sketchbook paper and the cel sketches, been working with sketchbooks for a while now and the paper is thicker, bleach white and somewhat grainy. The cel sketches seem to be on a thinner material similar to tracing paper but with less translucence, mainly for the backshading I think when lit against a lightbox.

If anyone has any other info your feedback is greatly appreciated! And thanks to those who have helped so far!

The punch is called an 'Acme punch' and is industry standard for both Japanese and American animation. $100-200 used on eBay if you can find one, 500 new.

Pre-punched paper and acetate is available at most fine art stores in the NW and the peg bar is about $2 at the same places.

I hope this helps :)

Wow, I wish art stores down here carried the stuff at all. Mine don't even carry acetate sheets to begin with, I've been working with transparencies which seem more prone to needing layers of water based paint at hr intervals for drying.

So leads me to a new question:
Anyone think they can visit one of these stores and get me info on prices/quantity per pack? If its a decent price I'd be willing to pay for the items and shipping plus a little extra for your help ^o^ I'd like the paper and acetate to be the same size and preferrably the standard 9.5x10inches. (I think that's the standard at least, I could be wrong, whatevers standard though XP)

Thanks again!

Well, it's probably not the cheapest, but an old fixture from the days of cel animation has put up an online catalogue:

Cartoon Colour Company

There's a bunch of different types of sketchbook paper you know. :^^: There are types of sketchbook paper that is thin, smooth, and ones even ones that aren't white. But yeah I get what your saying. :D But I was talking about the fanboy's paper...It's wrapped in plastic so I never touched it so just by looks I can't see any difference between sketch book paper except the holes.

If you want I can check out the prices for you but probably what everyone else is suggesting is better.
