Strange request...

Even though this isn't cel related I'm posting in this section since it's a request. I'm on the search for a specific brand of rice that we used to purchase when living in NJ. There was a local asian market we frequented for specific items. Now that we live in the country my only option is to purchase online but seeing that the little asian market we used to buy from doesn't even have a website I'm in desperate need of help locating some of this rice. I've found a few online asian markets but none carry this specific brand (packaging). However, if anyone has happened to try this brand before and know of another brand that is identical then I'm definitely willing to try another.

This specific rice is from Thailand and is AAA quality and is a long grain white rice (I believe to be Jasmine). The aroma and flavor are just wonderful. I'm tired of the same old stuff sold at Walmart, Kroger, etc. (American brands) and we did try one brand from Walmart that looked to be imported Jasmine rice but didn't even step up to the old brand we love. Ah, you purchased it from mitsuwa? I go there every other weekend and I could pik it up for you? I dont know any similar brands really, as I use short grain japanese rice, but they do have it. PM me if you want

We have a large Vietnamese and Thai community in the area I live in. Tons of different shops to go to... next time I go ill check and see if they have it. I am sure they will... let me know if you need me to buy some. ill be on the look out just in case.

I'd be very interested if either of you can locate this brand of rice for me.

I'm also trying to find some purple rice. Years ago I ate some that a Laotian co-worker brought for lunch and loved it. It's like a sticky rice and it dark purple in color when cooked. I found some for sale online today and am very tempted to buy some.

What's the flavor and texture like? Is it 'sushi' rice? I've been wanting to find a good brand of sticky rice to use for sushi but don't even know where to start.

Yes, it is sushi rice....and its not too easy to make lol. In order to get it right, you need to dedicate around 1 1/2 and follow the directions to a T.

But the flavors and textures are amazing and well worth the love and effort put into it. I will get a list of rice (2 main brands) that I use and send it to you, as I purchase the rice as the yen rate changes lol

The one tool that I think is an absolute must, for sushi rice, is a rice cooker for first timers

As for purple rice....I may try some LOL. I am off to research as well

I always used a rice cooker since cooking rice with a regular cooker/pot has always been a disaster for me, lol. My husband and I work alot and never have much time to cook. When we do have time though we are usually tired or lazy.

Been eating way to much fast food lately so I thought about making onigiri and maybe some simple dishes with rice to take to work.

I use Botan, which is a Japanese sticky 'sushi' rice. I use a ricecooker to make it, and generally put in about 1.5 cups of water for every cup of rice. My experience with the rice and the cooker has been that this is a good ratio, especially as I like the rice to be moist when I take it out, and not dried out.

Good luck getting that Thai rice. I can't recall seeing that brand in my area(it's either Japanese, Chinese or Indian rice where I live...oh, and Uncle Ben's). I can only imagine what the shipping on a 10lb bag of rice will be

As for purple rice, that would be your black rice. Black rice is not availble in the US(neither is red and both are illegal to import).

Lol! I know about the time crunch. I usually end up with sashimi instead of sushi

And when I finally find time to make the rice....the Boyfriend, sister, and doggies end up with most of it LOL

I see amazon has the blak/purple rice. I am tempted to just TRY it

Interesting. For the longest time, USDA has seized any and all red & black rice that people have brought in. I've seized a few bags myself. Perhaps there's now a US domestic supply? (sigh) Sometimes, I wish that USDA made it easier to figure out what can and can not come into the US.

I don't know how far away you are from Cincinnati, but I try to take a pilgrimage to Jungle Jim's http://www.junglejims.com/ every few months to stock up on international ingredients. They have that rice and many more. If you are ever in the area, you should check it out!

Thanks for checking. I will probably switch to a different brand then if I can't find it for sale online. I've been using some white rice I found at Walmart that is very similar to this brand but it has a weaker aroma and flavor. I'll definitely try some online stores and purchase small bags to see what I like.

FWIW, they've had both black and red rice at my local Randalls for at least a couple of years. Very small packages of course, and the instructions say you should mix them with regular white rice.
