I sent a pm to Killua, Animeobsessed and Dark-water-dragon concerning setting up the awards, so hopefully we can get this project underway soon. The last time we had awards, we started with a list of categories and opened it up to discussion from there. I'd like to propose that we do this again and hopefully conclude with a list of categories by mid-May.
I'd help out with the awards if I could, but not only am I incredibly useless on this front, but my PC blew a few weeks ago. I'm currently on my laptop, which doesn't have near the resources my PC did.
In any case, if this goes through, I'd definitely participate! I haven't been able to find any new cels I wanted for months anyway, so this would be a great way to roll around in what I already have~

Here's the proposed set of rules that's pretty much just been adapted from the last awards with a few changes:
1) You must be a registered member of Anime-Beta by the end of the artwork submission process.
2) You must physically own all artwork that you submit. Submitted artwork does not have to be posted in your gallery.
3) If you submit any artwork for consideration in this contest, you must vote for all categories, with exception of the hentai, settei, and animated galleries. These categories remain optional to vote in and are optional to submit artwork to.
4) All artwork submitted must not include watermarks or any other type of 'tag' that would affiliate it a gallery or owner.
No more than 8 submissions (5 standard categories, 3 optionals) per participant will be permitted.
Submission Info
1) Only one entry per category is allowed by any entrant.
2) Maximum pixel width for all standard size douga/genga/other artwork is 500 pixels, 600 for all pan/oversized artwork. You may submit artwork that is less than this pixel size, though. Regardless of the size of the item, the total file size can not exceed 300k. Standard size artwork is roughly 11.89 inches x 9.5 inches (302mm x 241 mm), while a pan or oversized item is much larger than this standard. Maximum file size for animation submissions is 1.2 megabytes.
3) Artwork that has received a Beta Award in previous years cannot be submitted under any category. This includes sequence mates or matching douga or genga to previous winners.
4) Unless there is an obvious difference, sequence mates in the same category are not permitted. Whoever submits the artwork first will be allowed to use that artwork in that particular category. If you manage to submit a sequence mate to an item that is already in that category, you will receive an e-mail and permission to enter another item in lieu of the repeated piece. This applies to all types of artwork.
5) Artwork submitted that is not Hanken or Other must be animation related.
6) Categories with fewer than five entries will be eliminated.
7) While you are permitted a total of 8 submissions(5 in the standard categories and 3 in the optionals), you are not required to submit eight different items. You may enter fewer items if you choose.
All submissions will be reviewed for adherence to the rules. If there is an issue, the submitter will be contacted by the reviewer to reach a resolution.
Early submissions
In the event that a participant is unable to submit their artwork during the official submission weekend, they will be allowed to submit their artwork to summerbetaawards09[at]gmail.com (please put the @ sign instead of 'at').
Your artwork must also meet all standard guidelines concerning pixel width and size.
If you choose to submit your artwork early, you agree to the following two rules:
1) Your artwork will be considered to be the last submission received. In other words, if Participant A submits a sketch from a scene as an early submission, but Participant B submits genga or douga from the same cut during the official submission period, Participant B will be allowed to use it as their official entry.
2) You will not be allowed to submit 'alternatives' in the event that another participant submits the same art piece. Unlike those participants who submit during the official submission period, early submission participants will not be alerted that their item was not accepted due to a previous submission.
Shikishii/Autographs
Shikishii/autographs have their own category. By submitting artwork to this category, you agree, in addition to the standard rules, to the following:
1) If an industry person signed a media that is not a standard shikishii board/blank white piece of paper, only the signature and any original accompanying artwork that the industry person drew is allowed to be submitted. In other words, if an artist signed their name and drew a happy face on a poster, you may only submit a scan of the portion of the poster containing the signature and happy face. For the summer awards, only shikishi or autographs on paper are accepted.
Image modifications
For the most part, the modification and/or enhancement of images (ie. Photoshop) is not permitted.
The three exceptions to the rules are:
1) Oversized images requiring multiple scans. You may piece these items together to make one complete image.
2) Sketches. As some sketches do not scan well, you are allowed to modify the image so that the lines appear darker. However, you are cautioned against making the lines 'too dark' as this may be indicative of a xerox copy instead of an original.
3) Artwork in the Animated section. You are allowed to cut, paste, etc. in order to make your creation, as many sketches are 'partials' and require artwork from other sketches. However, keep this within reason. No flashing lights, disco music, or anything else that didn't come along with your sketch packets.

I would say that matching douga or genga for previously submitted artwork (winner or not) should be allowed. After all, just because a cel is gorgeous doesn't necessarily mean its matching sketch will be. So if the sketch IS gorgeous, it should be recognized in its own right. But that's just my two cents...Killua wrote:...This includes sequence mates or matching douga or genga to previous winners.
Only douga or genga mates to previous winners would be affected, not mates to mere submissions. I think it's important to have this rule because otherwise we could have a ton of submissions of the genga or douga mates to previous years' winners, which would be repetitive. But you are right that the sketches can be beautiful in their own rights. What does everyone else think? We have to balance a sense of unfairness of winners sorta getting a second go at it compared to worthy sketches maybe not getting a fair chance if they can't be submitted.

Negative. One item can only be submitted in one catagory. You'll need to select the catagory that would be best for that item.LLslickD wrote:will you be able to submit the same piece in multiple categories? I would like this option. If the piece wins something it should then be eliminated from its other categories.

Regarding submission of sketches of previous cel winners, I'm fine with it.

We may need to return the animted file size back to its previous size due to system limitations instead of the new 1.2KB size. Sorry, but if the system is designed to only accept images under a certain size, we're going to be limited.
If people are cool with sketches of previous winners being accepted, I'm cool with it, too.
I do think that piecing together douga or genga shouldn't be allowed however for the main entries. When you do that it sorta stops being original artwork and becomes something else. We allow it for animation because animation is of a different nature and inherently entails combining different sketches together.
