Because the Hatfields didn't just shoot McCoys, they also shot coal company thugs and corporation-hired detectives. The Battle of Matewan, West Virginia, in 1920 is one of the great under-narrated moments in US history, and Sheriff Sid Hatfield (later assassinated by company thugs for his defense of miners being evicted from patch town homes) is one of the true heroes of America.
But then, I have some mountain roots myself. I recall that one of my mountain kinfolks, who was visiting another man's wife, was surprised one day by the husband's early return home. Feeling threatened by his demeanor, he raised his gun, which he was carrying in true patriotic homage to the Second Amendement of the Constitution, and asked the irate spouse to keep his distance. When the other man did not comply, my cousin shot him, having the courtesy to pick some non-lethal spot of his body. (IIRC, it was his foot.) He was then arrested, which of course was well and good and only to be expected, and, much to his surprise charged with "Attempted murder."
"Your cousin knew how to use his gun," I remember my mother angrily fuming over the news. "It was ridiculous to charge him with that! If he'd'a 'tempted t'murder that there man, he'd'a killed him!"
Which made every bit of logical sense to me, even though I lived my whole life in town and not in the hills. (BTW, as part of a plea-bargain, the authorities dropped the silly "attempted murder" charge against my cousin, and he pled guilty to "felonious wounding" or some such lesser charge, did his time, which of course everyone knew he should do for violatin' the laws of man and God, and came out some months later, his dignity still unsullied.)

Didnt even know what a Hatfield or McCoy was
till I looked it up on Wiki after reading this thread
LOL!!!

I must not be American enough to understand
what this feud was really all about or why it was such a big
deal to U.S. history.
Sounds like violence-crazed neighbors who hated each other
or your average rival gangs
Ummm.. I'm going to go w/ McCoy
just because i like the sound
of the name better than Hatfield and they were
the poorer of the 2 fams

I remember so many cartoons spoofing the story of Hatfields and McCoys.
At first when I saw Gonzai's post I thought she was smoking something to post something so random, but then saw Jenn's sig before it disappeared and it all made sense.
I placed my vote, but won't say which way I went. I value my life and from where I'm standing I have Jenn on one side and Gonzai on the other.
That's some scary shit y'all.

Mum's the word on which one I voted for after seeing both Jenn and Nida's sigs.
Although I've heard of the names regarding some feud, I have no idea why it's important, etc. I'm with GK on remembering cartoons poking fun at it.
Now, why does that feel like my house in the middle?
