Halloween Party Help

Post by jenn-b »

I need some serious help here. And my husband is of absolutely no help. We have been invited to a very formal party - Elegant Costume or Black Tie - on Halloween. I have no idea which direction to go. Any ideas?!?!

The All-Important First Step: you and your husband need to decide if you want to do costumes or just formal attire. Personally, I would choose a costume. After all, it is Halloween. :D

If costumes, you should discuss what genre suits the two of you best, since you would need matching costumes. Since this sounds *very* formal, I would suggest the following:

* Historical (pick a time period and get recreation formal wear)

* Film (choose specific formal-wear from a recognizable film)

*Famous people/Celebrity couples

* Slightly flamboyant modern formal attire, with Venetian or New Orleans masks. If you want masks, I highly recommend http://www.frenchquartermaskstore.com/ (I own several pieces from their shop; Donna Crawford and Diane Trapp make very nice high-end masks) Their store also does custom orders. You can also call them - they have many more pieces in their shop in New Orleans than they do on their website.

It is very close to Halloween, so you'll either need to either make them yourself (do you sew?), order pre-made costumes from the internet (always risky), or beg a local tailor to burn the midnight oil for you. :)

If you're getting them made locally, I suggest going to your local fabric store (JoAnn's?) and flipping through their pattern books. Costumes will be at the back of every book. Patterns run anywhere from $1 to about $15 each. Expect to pay your seamstress anywhere north of $300 per costume, depending on how fancy you're going. Either that, or beg someone you know who is familiar with sewing clothing.
Or, if you're particularly lucky, you'll have a local costume shop which rents costumes. My local store (www.fantasyattic.com) usually books rentals very quickly, so if you find a place near you DON'T HESITATE. :D

If black tie formal, simply look in your closet or take yourself and your husband to the nearest high-end department store. Just make sure you match.

Well being a "formal" party being held on Halloween I would go with a Tux for him and a formal for you with the masks that are quite fancy with feathers , sequines and such. Think like something out of what a high end party in let's say New Orleans around Marti Gras.

I agree with you on the formal wear. Like something with a mask that has to do with halloween. A witch costume would be also something as long it's a nice and not looking torn and such. That's what I understand as "Elegant Costume or Black Tie" . And as ReiTheJelly mentioned something matching and a time period. I would say more of a dress from like some type of Victorian era dress and have a nice mask and your husband with a matching tux and then think something toward Halloween. Something like that is "Elegant Costume or Black Tie"

I would go for elegant costume...something vampire-like. A sexy gown and tux with long nails, pale faces, blood red lips and fangs? I'm sure you know where to look for inspiration

Haf fun!

What is going on at the party? Dancing? Formal sit-down dinner? Cocktails? I'd tailor (har) my choice around what I'd be most comfortable wearing for whatever was going on. I would not want a huuuuuge puffy skirt at a sit-down dinner, for example.

I'd probably do something like Princess Serenity and Tuxedo mask, since they seem like a pretty easy to throw together/formal/easy to wear costume :D
