Goodbye Geocities

Geocities was my very first website. I still have it, but I guess now it will be gone.

I moved due to name change over 10 years ago to another site and got own domain in the end.
But right now I'm looking for a good host but that's reasonable priced.

I use lunarpages and have been nothing but happy with them.

I use hostmonster for my website... they are great.

I've gone through several hosts, and eventually had issues with most. I love my latest host, but they're pricey. IMO, you get what you pay for when it comes to hosting, but most folks can get away with just about any of the big name hosts. I hosted for several years with Lunarpages, and aside from a completely incompetent support staff, their services were decent (They get worse the more technology you're using on your site, so I finally had to ditch them after having 7 databases disappear from my server for 14 hours one day and not even their sysadmins could explain it).

I've heard good and bad things about most of the big names (Hostmonster, Bluehost, 1and1, GoDaddy, etc), and I have a friend who hosts with Dot5Hosting. The worst thing I can say about Dot5 is that their servers are almost insufferably slow.

I'd recommend my current host, but most wouldn't want to pay their prices

(honestly, their prices are pretty nuts for anyone who isn't a serious web geek). I started for a month or two with their shared hosting, but quickly bought my way up to a virtual private server

I guess my best advice to you on hosting would be: To find out who's out there for providers, some of the "top ten" sites are good. But, don't trust their reviews. Go do some independent research on each one -- the most telling tale is if the host has forums where current and prospective customers can post issues/ask questions. You'll get a good idea of what kind of problems they tend to have and/or if they're right for you.

I'm glad there's people out there who are archiving stuff so things aren't just disappearing forever.

My first website was built on another oldtimer server, Tripod (and still exists today!), but I'm really sad to see Geocities go. RIP, old friend!

I too moved my website stuff over to my own domain. I've had my hosting with SurpassHosting.com for four+ years now, and they've been absolutely wonderful. I had a VPS with them for awhile, until I toned down my website and downgraded the hosting to shared. Still very happy with them. :)

zerospace: Thank you! I check the host out. I paid for years every three month around $40 for just 250 MB (megabytes) so the host you gave me still seems more reasonable then the one I used.
A friend of mine uses 1and1 and likes them a lot. I GoDaddy seems to be ok. I never heard of Hostmonster or Bluehost. I have to look at these places and compare and you right I should check out some reviews and do some research.
I would like a host where you have a private password protected area and where I can build a contact page without having my e-mail displayed and have them send feedback. I never done that one but would like to be able to have that.
