Question about Bravestarr

Well had a look on several galleries and this remember me my trips in the US years ago. I crossed many states from side to side : GA, VA, NJ, NY...

So here is my (old europe citizen) question :
What is the difference between a "SHERIFF", a "MARSHALL" and a "RANGER" ?

They all have a "star" showing their police responsibility.
So, why is Bravestarr a "Marshall" and not a "Sheriff", are they levels of responsibility or geographical aspects in the name ?

Marshal is a US military rank.
