Thanks for putting together the awards, and thanks to everyone who participated! :)

Seriously. I didn't vote for it because it looks like she's feeling her self up and is about to get off, which isn't at all tranquil to me. I didn't give it another glance, so detail and the size were all secondary. Sure it's a nice cel overall, but not for the purpose of this category IMO. Obviously a number of people thought differently. Try and be a bit more appreciative that you did get votes and placed.

I'm happy my oversized cel won in it's category! :P

Thanks for organizing the awards this year. I hope I wasn't too hard on you. :)

.....

Olivier, until I see comments from the 13 entrants who didn't win any awards, I suggest you keep your opinion to yourself.

I don't care for sore losers.....really.

This contest is supposed to be 'fun'and not about how much bling you'll win.

I will echo the thanks for those who put in the time to set things up and run the awards this year.

I am quite blown away that I got 2 seconds and 2 thirds this year. When I viewed all the great artwork put up this year I only thought that I had a small chance in one catagory (Rage).

I'm absolutely -elated- that my no name but love to collect from series won an award! Thanks to all who voted for my beloved robot daimos in the special effects category. I submitted weird (beloved -at least to me) cels this year and just REALLY HAPPY that, that old series placed. Like I said I get a lot of satisfaction when the obscure series I collect gets some attention. /kis Thanks to all who participated and to the organizers this year.

Oh and HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone!

Thanks for your opinions. Please let me just make a few additional comments to clear the misunderstandings.
Right now, it just seems petty to insinuate that you lost only because all your cel’s detail could not be fully seen. Just think of all the people who didn’t place at all, and you’re complaining because you only got third? You don’t seem grateful.
I did not mean that I lost only because my Kotori cel's details could not be fully seen. However I insist that due to the small image size it was just impossible for me to submit an image that really made justice to the cel - I tried for an hour and ended-up submitting the image you know, that doesn't look good to me. Please be understanding instead of getting upset. It may seem pretentious but if you could see the cel in person I am sure you would agree with me that a 600-pixel wide image cannot restitute its qualities. This Kotori cel is 10 times better than my pan cel of Kanoe that got the 1st place in "Death/Dying" plus the "most votes" award. Only it is impossible to tell from the image I submitted. The fact that all the lines are hand-traced makes a huge difference but it is not noticeable on such a small image.
Stating that one of the cels that beat yours doesn’t compare artistically is rude. I’m assuming it’s mine you’re speaking of since the Raphael seems more detailed to me. Perhaps I’m wrong.
It is precisely because I did not want to be rude that I did not specify which cel I was talking about. I did not do it yesterday, I will not do it now.
Seriously. I didn't vote for it because it looks like she's feeling her self up and is about to get off, which isn't at all tranquil to me.
For your information it is not her own hand that you can see, but Kanoe's. She is definitely asleep. I can see why this would disturb those who have not seen the movie though.
Olivier, until I see comments from the 13 entrants who didn't win any awards, I suggest you keep your opinion to yourself. I don't care for sore losers.....really.
I have been polite at all times, I suggest you do that too. My comment was constructive, unlike yours. I was only trying to raise a concern about the image size, in preparation for the awards 2010. This had nothing to do with being a sore loser (I submitted 2 cels and got 3 awards, so I would not call this losing :D ). I knew from the start I had nothing to gain and everything to lose by explaining on the forum what I think about this image size problem. My position remains unchanged.

I have seen the movie. I still think the hand is disturbing. Besides, Kotori is not asleep. She was knocked unconscious and then kidnapped! Of course she's not tranquil! Frankly, her facial expression turned me away from voting before I even noticed the hand. She looks like she's in pain, or having a nightmare, or something.

Besides, since when have details or the lack thereof been the number one deciding factor in whether an image has artistic merit or not? Heck, look at Picasso . . .

Actually, several people found your comments rather rude and offensive because you picked out one category in specific. It doesn't matter that you didn't say which cel is artistically inferior. The fact remains that you said one was. That is rude.

If I was rude, it was not my intention. I said one cel was artistically inferior to the cel of Kotori and this is simply the truth. You would have to be blind not to see it. Besides nobody contradicted me on this one, thus proving people agree with me. If people must stop saying the truth because it may hurt someone, they will have to remain silent at all times.

Kotori is definitely tranquil as Kanoe did not knock her unconscious but sent her in a dream in which she spends most of the movie - please watch it again. Besides if you want to go down this route, just be aware that the winning cel of this category is unidentified, so we really don't know if the character is tranquil or not. As far as I know it may be frozen to death.

Really....are you guys serious!! /omg

This is suppose to be a fun contest!!! The idea is that you don't have to know what has happened in the series and you get exposed to new galleries and series through this contest. You look at all the images and vote for which one best portrays that category as described by the contest rules.

I have been surprised at the tone of the comments before and after these awards. It makes me wonder if several of my friends here at beta are correct in not participating.

Please let this be a fun contest and let the bickering drop!! :)

Well, Olivier, whether or not you think were rude and whether or not the image is indeed "tranquil", your cel took third place. And that's the end of the story -- complaining about it afterward is pointless, as the results are in and the contest is over. Who won and why is not up for debate.

The awards are for fun, and the only thing you're proving is that you're a sore loser. :x

I wanted to post in public that I contradict you.

People, you fail to understand poor Olivier's position.

1) He's male. For men, size does matter (don't you all know this by now).
2) Right after the end of a sports event the fan of the losing team will always have an excuse why their team lost.

In the famous words spoken on all gaming forums everywhere...

"Cwy moor n00b"

To those who played WoW on Blackrock in the early days...

"He's PissT"

But Soundwave says it the best:

"Soundwave superior, Olivier inferior."

I'm a person who shared some of Olivier's hard feelings the first two times I participated and was shut out of the awards. In fact, I sat out the following two awards events as a result, grumbling to myself that it was all a popularity contest. Aesthetically superior cels (not just mine, but those from other collections that I voted for) were being shut out because fans voted for art that represented series that they personally loved, not for images that were good examples of animation art. :kaioken

Eventually, I came around to the idea that it just wasn't worth being mad about. Yes, there were pan cels that I considered submitting and didn't because I previewed them as thumbnails and didn't think that they showed off well in that format. Yes, I submitted in "Tranquility" and was beaten out of any award in this category by Olivier's submission and two others. :splat

So what? :hippy I enjoyed looking through the images and like the idea of getting a much broader knowledge of anime than the limited number of series that I collect. Overall, it was fun to play, and the awards aren't any more meaningful than what they are. The cels that I submitted that didn't win awards aren't any less aesthetically beautiful or precious to me.

When the field gets sophisticated enough to have real art critics judge submissions and give "Golden Globes," then it will be the right time to discuss fair rewards for superior aesthetics.

There are some valid points about the sizing of images that ought to be discussed thoroughly. But I agree with a previous post: :dh the proper time to do this is when the ground rules are being set up for the next set of awards, not now.
