May your next decade be a successful as you last one.

I had a very quiet day, then my wife took me to the local Yacht Club for an early-bird dinner (good crab, as usual), and I came home for cake and presents. No cels, but my daughter gave me the Tsubasa Art Book (lovely!), my brother gave me an anthology of American graphic art work, and even a good family friend passed on a Japanese manga volume she'd somehow found. (It turned out to be a volume of Osamu Akimoto's Kochikame, the longest-running manga title in history.)

My wife gave me a steering wheel cover for my aging car, a new slow cooker, and a sweater; plus she ordered a new rocker for the TV room that matches hers.

I'm slowly getting used to being a sensible, mature 60something-sensei rather than the debauched, unstable 50something I used to be. Fortunately, I have 3651 days to practice.

Thanks again to everyone who posted kind thoughts and messages.

Thanks again, everyone. I got one last unexpected birthday gift from Vampyreshoujo today (thanks to the slow mail in Cephiro, which happens every time puddles freeze). It was a nice cel of (the other) Sakura from Hyper Police, who's become a kind of anima figure for me. (That's why she's in the sig. below: power animals/spirits for males are always female and vice versa.)

Edit: I tracked it down, and it's actually from the same episode and scene as the sketch in the sig. below. Nice.

That was a kind, and especially thoughful gesture: thanks, Vamppy, if you're watching. I'll get this up in my January "upgrade" (still waiting on one more YJ 1000 yen win to go "Received US").

My sixties may be a decade of living within my resources, but at least they come with a lot more freedom to work on things I'd only dreamed of having the time to do before. Watch for some more academic essays on the mythology and folktale roots of manga/anime. (I gave a teaser to the local writer's group Saturday on "The Swan Maiden" as a ground for "Ah My Goddess," and you should have seen the fur fly in the discussion afterwards. I obviously hit a controversial topic there too.)

I have a Beta-focused research project in mind too, but I'm waiting until a few more hot threads cool down before I propose it, lest people think I'm planning it as a personal comment on any particular individual.

Live well, live in the present.
