Post by Captain Haddock »

Ok if anyone recalls I was selling off a few bits and bobs a while back and it was all in aid of a trip to the Link to purchase this beaut!

Whey hey! Brilliant to see another Ninja Scroll cel in your collection. I agree with your statement that it's a key shot and is especially nice to see Jubei in his straw hat. Thanks for sharing the image

That really is a lovely image, with really striking colors. Sometimes these blue-shifted nighttime scenes can be opportunities for designers to show their stuff. And the bg is a perfect foil for the colors. Thanks for putting the cel in context. I don't know Ninja Scroll, more's the pity, and you tell enough so that I can see why the hat (beautifully realized, down to the ribbon that helps hold it on in non-oh-doodoo moments) is so important.

Having gotten a big miscellaneous batch of cels from another anime movie, "A Tree of Palme," I can tell you that 90-95% of cels from anything deserve to be destroyed. There are lots of elbows, partials, random background characters, and miscellaneous boogers to animate. But I'm glad that this one escaped.

Congratulations!

Thank you all and yes Krafty it's about time I had another NS cel to add!

And thank you for the input Sensei, you always think of something more to say. I've loved NS and Kawajiri for along time and in terms of cel collecting the detail and that strange slender beauty the characters always seem to have in his films is really what captivates me. But I know how to appreciate art I haven't seen, your CCS collection continues to fascinate me in all sorts of ways.

Ha that's true, I never really thought of it in that way I mean I knew there would be alot of duff shots, but I suppose that would be around the ratio (maybe they did just keep the best bits). But what I love about your site more then anything is that there is a real love there evident for the process of animation itself, I can't think of another gallery which tells me as much about animation as yours!

As I don't update very often, I like to shout about the rare occasions that I do :P! I've made a nice start to my Bleach collecting:

Man there's potential here to gain such a ribbing from some quarters... :hurt:

Congrats on starting a series collection with a prize. It's important to me to have at least one piece per series that I can feel is really significant, and around which I can build lesser pieces that give a fuller view of the characters and art.

And yes, what you say about genga is true. You lose the immediate impact of the colors, but gain (especially in CGI series) a visible gain in artistic quality. In most (not all) CGI series, the douga, and so the broadcast images, tend to be simplified outlines of the fully developed genga image. Plus key animators tended to finish out their images beyond the safety frame, so you actually see more of the image in the genga than was ever intended to be seen by the broadcast or DVD viewer.

Niiiice! No ribs from me.

Thanks Sensei, I try and aim to get 1 good image of each character I'm after in a series/movie. It doesn't always end up that way, but that is what I gradually try and aim towards. Ninja Scroll, Akira and Bleach have along way to go but my Burn Up and VHDB collection are pretty far advanced in that score. It's mostly a factor of economics though, hence the above split.

That's interesting what you said about about key animators, I never realised that their illustrations went above and beyond the normal image in that way. I'll have to keep an eye out for it in future.

Ha ha, you weren't the quarter I was expecting it, your nice Sensei :^^: !
