Cel purchase advise needed!

Post by MyBaby »

Ok, Someone had a cel labeled for sale. I asked the purchase price and they said $200.
Then I asked if they could email me a larger image so I could see the details of the cel. Their response was, due to image theft and fan repros they will not provide an image larger than 3" X 3".
Does this response seem odd?
They expect me to purchase a $200. cel based on their evaluation that the cel is in good condition and I can view the 3 x 3 size on their web site? Please advise. /?:

I can understand in a way why they are concerned, since I have been a victim of image theft and several people making fan cels out and t-shirts of my artwork (hence why I began watermarking all my images). On the other hand, if you are buying the piece, then you do have a right to view it (maybe they don't have a larger image???).

Either way, if the purchase is being done through Paypal, then you have buyer protection (just make sure it is sent to a confirmed Paypal address).

If they don't feel comfortable to give larger images or if they do not have it available, then just be very precise in asking the conditions of the cel.

Most of my purchases have beeen with a 3x3 image. Usually the size of the rubberslug entries- or the Madori / YH Japan site.
You can usually see line fading and damage. I agree that giving a larger sized cel image is not smart to the majority of collectors. I have never had any problems- I agree that paypal will give you piece of mind also.
But believe me- 200.00 is not a bad price for the majority of nice cels

Am I the only other person here who thinks this is absurd? $200 for a cel where the seller will only provide a 3 inch by 3 inch image is rather ridiculous. Do you all routinely buy expensive items on eBay when the photos are fuzzy and horrid? I know I don't. You can definitely get an idea of line fading from a small image, but damage .... maybe not. Paint loss? Maybe not.

I've been asked for larger scans for less expensive cels, and will gladly provide those scans as long as I feel the buyer isn't wasting my time. When I give a larger scan, I generally send an un-retouched image (no cropping, no filters to clean up the image, nothing, just raw scanner crappiness -- admittedly, my scanner produces pretty darned good raw scans :P).

A great many of my images on my web sites are small -- I do that to keep the amount of space and bandwidth my site uses to a minimum. My site protects my images against hotlinkers and that's about all I care. I hate hotlinkers because they aren't just stealing my images, they're stealing my site bandwidth, which costs me extra money if I use too much. Image thieves, though? I could care less. You want to make a fan cel of one of my cels? Go for it. If they try to sell it as the real deal, well... that's another issue entirely (and, really, you don't need a scan of the real cel to do it, either!).

So yeah. I'm sorry.... but I think a 3" x 3" image size limit for a $200 cel is craptacular. Do they do the same thing for cels they want $500 for? $1k? Yikes! If you want to protect your image, watermark it. But if I were the interested buyer... I'd tell the seller that he or she can keep their cel, and I'll keep my money. ;)

I would send them a polite reply, saying that the only way you'll buy is if they provide a bigger image. Inform them that they are free to watermark the piece, if they're worried about art theft. Possibly provide them with a link to your gallery, so they know you're a serious collector and not someone scamming free hi-res images of desirable artwork.

As someone who just asked a seller for a close up of a $40 cel I don't think that's unreasonable to ask the seller for a better picture. My seller provided one and we both discovered that the cel was damaged!! So I would always ask either very detailed questions about the cel or for close-ups.
That said, I've also bought cels off of Y!Japan and that picture is not huge or detailed. So it depends if you know if the seller is trustworthy or not too.

Thanks everyone for your insights. Here What I did. I counteroffered their asking price, since there was no douga and I can only hope their idea of very good condition is the same as mine. I'll let you know what happens! Have a good weekend! :cheers
