Deadbeat buyer question

Post by Goldknight »

I had several auctions end Oct. 7. All have been paid except one. The buyer uses the member id l00pp. Real name is Kenneth Santana. Anyone know this asshole? I opened a unpaid case on ebay awhile back and haven't heard anything. Just curious if anyone has experience with these cases? If so how does it work and what happens? Are we able to leave negative feedback? Is there a risk of retaliatory feedback? I've never had this happen before. This guy had contacted me a longtime ago about the same cel and we had agreed on a price. Then he disappeared, emailed later, and had said he'd send payment that was $100 less than what we had agreed upon. I saved all of these emails. Now he's bid and won this cel and my hands are tied. Frankly I'd rather re-list it. People like this really piss me off. Beware of this buyer on your auctions. :redhot :redhot

I don't often get non-paying bidders on Ebay, the cases I've opened were then shortly paid for. I believe you only have to wait 4 days after opening a case then your within your right to re-list the item if you want to. He sounds like a very frustrating buyer!

eBay changes their policies about as frequently as night turns to day, so this could be inaccurate information. I'm trying to remember the last time I sold a pile of things at once (not cels). Two years ago? Three? So it's worth checking.

I couldn't leave negative feedback for a non-paying bidder issue I had. Any buyer can leave it for a seller regardless of if I shipped in a timely manner and all was well. For example, a buyer once left me a negative for shipping charges that were too high on a $10 lot of cards (huge, heavy lot). eBay sided with them.

It's my understanding though, if a buyer does NOT pay, s/he can NOT leave you negative feedback. If they do, you can contact eBay. If this buyer pays, there is a chance they can still leave you a negative for some asinine reason. If they do pay, my best suggestion is to ship immediately. eBay did recently put a "report a buyer" link, but I've not checked it out due to not having the need. The only thing I've sold in ages are cels, and everyone from the community is pretty darn good with paying.

Those emails, were they sent through eBay's messaging ONLY, meaning you have copies in your inbox and sent box through eBay messaging? If not, they're useless. :( If you do have them, report him for doing that. Go to your feedback profile and there should be a link on the right, bold with a "new" tag. It's my hope eBay is stepping forward again to be stricter with deadbeat buyers.
This is my signature. Fancy, hey?

yeah in the current ebay system you can only leave positive feedback for buyers, not negative. It is very unhelpful for sellers, as the bad buyers don't get marked well as such.

Close the case immediately and get your final value fees. The buyer gets a "mark" against them...but that's really not enough in my mind. But I've seen this enough times lately that I'm getting used to it.

Let us his information if you know anything.
I believe he pays and he is in safe. Thank you.
Guess I can tell them he is just a flake.....

I think everyone else has already answered your questions, but the general rules are:

1) You have to wait 4 days from when you open the case to close it. Once closed (if closed without buyer response/payment), the buyer gets an unpaid item strike and you get your fees credited to your account. eBay will tell you when you can close a case if you visit your seller dashboard/account area. Alternately, you can opt to allow eBay to automatically close the case for you when it's time.

2) You cannot leave negative feedback for the buyer -- and he/she cannot leave it for you once the case is opened.

What I normally do with deadbeats (and I've heard it all by now, I swear), is once I close the unpaid item case, I add them to my blocked bidders list. Unfortunately for us sellers, there's no way to warn other sellers, but the good news is that they can't retaliate against you for the unpaid item strike, at least .... and you get your fees back. ;)

eBay's policies are constantly being revised (sometimes good, sometimes bad -- depends on how you look at it), but I'll say this at least: for awhile, the system was being skewed towards the buyer and rather heavily. Lately, they've made a lot of positive changes, I think, that help sellers with hostile/deadbeat/royal-pain-in-the-rear buyers. Of course, if you throw in all the new rules for sellers to get/maintain powerseller/top-rated status with fee discounts, it adds up to one major pain in the @$$, but that's neither here nor there, I suppose. Somehow I've managed to hang onto my reputation & account status on eBay despite all the changes, so it is more than definitely possible to do it.

Good luck, but it sounds like you're all but finished with this jerkweed anyways ;)!
