Madoka Magica copy sketches

Post by Yupa »

Studio Shaft has been very open about the production process of their major hit Puella Magi Madoka Magica. They put out an extensive collection of ‘Key Animation Notes’ which cover most of the cuts from both the TV series and the two movies. Furthermore, their Production Note volumes covered the setting designs for the show.

I'd like to show you what I received in the mail today. This set of copy sketches is named Key Animation Clear File and was sold by Shaft at Comiket 84 a few weeks ago. This set covers two cuts from the first movie and it has all genga printed on A4 paper, even with registration holes.

This clear file had 14 genga and 1 background layout in it.

As a bonus each set includes a single frame of a film strip in a cardboard packaging. I was hoping to get Homura, but Madoka is nice too. I checked inside the packaging to confirm it is a real film strip.

I made four animations using the genga in this set. I used a standard of 4 fps in these animations. I hope you like them!

You can find the individual sketches here.

So, what do you think? Are official releases like this a good substitute for original artwork or would you rather ignore a series if there are no original sketches available?

P.S. I thought it was funny I found the first cut in this news article.

That's pretty neat. I like that. So that's the snuggle set I heard so much about awhile back. :D

Teeth brushing has become popular recently. Well...as someone once said about my teeth brushing cel "I like girls who keep their teeth clean!"

It's a nice set. /no1

I have no idea about the current Madoka sketch situation.

I think it's great that something like this is available. I'd be tempted if I were a bigger fan of Madoka. There's a production art book out for Attack on Titan covering the first few eps that is a close analog but lacks the scannable genga.

At the same time, it's not the same as having the real deal in hand but better than cases in which nothing is ever released for a series. Rebuild of Eva likely falls into this category but being a huge fan of Eva to begin with, this doesn't impact my view of Rebuild. There is the fan cel option too but nothing beats the real deal.
