Scene changes
Have you ever owned any artwork, that is not in an anime?
What I mean by that, is you know where the scene should be
from, however, the animators edited the scene, and so now
your cel/genga are no longer in the anime?
I have a couple of those from Hikaru no Go. I know exactly
where the artwork should go, however, it appears that they
either edited out the scene, or changed it completely.
Feedback?? Also show pictures!! ^_^

Re: Scene changes
I have a couple at least!
http://jadeduo.rubberslug.com/gallery/i ... mID=372544
And this one...
http://jadeduo.rubberslug.com/gallery/i ... mID=145011
They are both from the same scene in episode 55, when Ail and Mako talk about the connection between food and love and then get interrupted by En.
It's really interesting because it looks like the whole scene was restoryboarded and things that were close ups are now far away and things that were far away are now close ups. I recommend watching the scene because you can kind of see where they switched things and where my two beauties should be slotted in. I've always wanted to ask the animation director if the eppy what the thought process was on that.

Re: Scene changes
That's pretty cool. I like seeing that I am not the only one who has this
oddity. Makes you wonder what they originally had in mind, before they
made the change. @_@
Anyway, keep them coming!! ^_^

Re: Scene changes
Here's another, from CCS:
http://sensei.rubberslug.com/gallery/in ... emID=81516
The sketch is labeled "#28, c. 275," and indeed at the end of Ep. 28, Sakura looks up from a tricky card capture (of The Shot) and finds Tomoyo, in school uniform with bonnet, avidly videotaping the whole affair. But not from this angle or in this pose. So this too is a cut that was produced (I unsuccessfully bid on the matching cel some years later) but cut from the final broadcast version.
Also this cel from the TnN OP sequence:
http://sensei.rubberslug.com/gallery/in ... emID=98266
Sara, evidently, was to appear first wrapped in bandages like The Invisible Man, but in the final form was represented only by an origami crane being dangled by invisible hands. After she becomes visible, she then took her place in a memorable close-up sequence. Also, Ruka's character design is significantly different from the one used in the broadcast show.
A slightly different issue is raised by this sketch from the TnN OP sequence:
http://sensei.rubberslug.com/gallery/in ... mID=347752
Dispel's sequence in the OP originally was much longer, according to the gengas that I obtained, but was slashed to the midriff in the final version. But this cut took place relatively late, as a number of cels from the long version have showed up on the market, notably the cel that matches my genga, now in Tictac's collection.
Interesting topic!

Re: Scene changes
I guess this counts as an example…
http://celluloidcentral.rubberslug.com/ ... mID=370970
This is a test cel from episode 10 of Serial Experiments Lain depicting Lain as she yells at god to leave her alone. The cel is labeled A28 and is the final shot in the sequence. The final cut that eventually made it into the anime is also 28 frames, and while they are visually similar, freeze-frame A28 from the anime and compare it to my cel and you will notice where the art-style differs drastically.
I actually prefer the art of this cel to the final cut, oddly enough.

Re: Scene changes
Very interesting sensei. I must ask, on the TnN OP sequence, where did you obtain
your information on the scene change? I would love to know why they decided to
change the scene on one of my sets.

Re: Scene changes
Yes, I have actually. You'd think these sketches from School Rumble would fit into Season 1, episode 15, "Summer, Friendship, and Fireworks," but they're not any where to be found in the anime.

I have one other sketch that is also not featured in the anime as well. A fellow collector and I believe that they are scrapped, unfinished episodes of Season 3.
I also have a rejected trace-line OP cel from Sailor Moon R as well:

Re: Scene changes
I have a cel like this from the Gundam Wing movie -- I've never quite been able to figure out what it is, but the background definitely resembles scenes in the movie, so my thought is that this was perhaps a part of an extended flashback scene that was cut (since the cel is labled A1, and the actual sequence similar in angle & pose that is in the movie comes after the whole area is on fire):
http://www.zero-space.net/gallery2/disp ... temid=3150
I honestly have no idea, though. The cel came with the background, but the BG was cut down, so there aren't any markings on it to look at for more info. It's a cool cel nonetheless!

Re: Scene changes
Thanks, Gonzai, but I'm not sure what your question is.Gonzai wrote:Very interesting sensei. I must ask, on the TnN OP sequence, where did you obtain

The Sara/Ruka cel came from a big online sale by Emily McQuillan of Celga, and I got my background info from my good friend Vapalla, who at the time had a much more comprehensive TnN collection.
The Dispel sketch set came from Anime Link. I spent a long time comparing it to the OP footage, frame by frame, until I could see where the studio made the cut. The sequence of Dispel dancing that the big omission leads to was, evidently, not part of the original plan, as Vapalla has a cel that is the second visible image after the cut, and it is labeled "A2."
Did I answer your question?

Re: Scene changes
I have a few backgrounds and cels that fit that description.

The two backgrounds above come from Mirage of Blaze but are not in the show. They came from the same source as my other MOB bgs so there is no reason to think that they are fakes. Not to mention there is no reason why anyone would bother to make fake bgs from a boy's love show. When I use the numbers on the bgs to find the scenes, it is obvious to see why they were not used. They contain mistakes. In the first one, the field in front of the tori gate should actually be a lake. In the second, the roof of the shrine is angled in the wrong direction. The company painted them wrong and they had to be redone.

The bg above comes from the Last Unicorn, but also does not show up. I can tell where it was supposed to go, and I can even see the same mountains in the scene (just from different angles and distances). Like the MOB bgs this bg came from a reliable source.

I have a few cels with the same issues. The one above is from Sorcerer Hunters. I can track it down to the proper sequence, but that sequence ends before this cel appears.

Re: Scene changes
Zero - that is a small image. I am sure it would be hard to find, but you know GW so well, I
am not surprised you have a good idea where it should have come from. ^_^
Sensei - I was talking about the TnN cel. You seemed to have good inside information on
what happened and why it was cut. On the sets I have, they clearly show they are from
episode one, you can see right away the scene they come from, but the final scene was
totally changed. Just wondering where you got your inside information from. I need an
insider source. @_@
Beautiful backgrounds GM. I can see how you are able to tell why they were scrapped and
not used, by the angles and such. I wish it were that easy with mine. I am guessing that
someone at the last moment said, "Yeah, let's cut this scene, and let's change the image in
this one while we are at it". >_<
Thanks for the pics guys. Its great getting to see all these misfits. ^_^

Re: Scene changes
I have one of these. (At least, I think it counts as one of these ...)
It's from Weiss Kreuz, from a pivotal moment during a fight between the "good guys" and "bad guys". My cel is clearly from the show. It is a gorgeous cel: oversized ... key, end cel ... and has an original matching background. The background matches up exactly with what is shown on the screen during the fight scene. But, in the actual show (as you can see from the screen cap at the bottom of the linked page), they decided to use a harmony cel for this particular moment in the fight, instead of the cel.
Aya & Farfarello Fight
I would love to also find the harmony cel that was actually used. But I have to admit I really adore the cel I have way more. It has so much detail to it, and I love the way it works with the background.
