Pricing?

Post by Noriko010884 »

I might be posting in the wrong place but I am hoping some of you can help with regards to pricing Ghibli pieces.

Cels are harder and harder to come by, resulting in inflating prices, and Ghibli films are firm favourites, further adding to their value. I'm not entirely sure I want to part with anything in my collection, but then I have been on the fence for some years now.

I have had an individual contact me via RS a number of times over the years asking if I would be willing to sell a few pieces.

I have looked on a couple of sites for a general idea of the going rate, but I myself have felt that the prices are just extortionate and only getting "worse" (from a collectors standpoint, even though I have still forked out a heck of a lot of money to acquire my collection over many years). So, to give me an idea of what sort of price these items command I am putting their links here, just putting the feelers out, while I wait for the individual to get back to me.

Links removed. (Decided to strictly sell only what I know I won't regret parting with. I would be silly to let some temporary pressure get the better of me as it has done in the past.)

Many thanks to anyone who can offer help with a guideline figure.

Ghibli stuff always does well, and is an exception, but cels in general have tanked in price over the years.

It's hard to price those. I could be way off considering I haven't been a dealer in some time, but the Totoro and Mononoke cels probably $1500.00 + each. The Nausicaa sketch, that's difficult.....$250.00 ish?

Browse around on Yahoo Japan Auctions and even Mandarake's auctions, see if anything they have in stock could be used as a good comparison. I could be way off as the prices on Ghibli goodies have changed a lot.

For the Mononoke one, I've seen lesser scenes go for more than $1500. The cel you have is not only THE most pivotal scene in the movie, but one of the absolute best frames that probably exists from it. The head is perfectly centered AND you can still clearly see a good part of San's face. I don't have the inside knowledge of having been a dealer, but I watch Mononoke cels fairly regularly. If something like this were put to an auction, I would expect the bid to go much higher than $1500. Mononoke cels of this high a caliber do not come up for sale often.

your Totoro cel is equally impressive and should bring a really good price to the right buyer

As i buy almost all my ghibli in yens , to be able to compare with my cels , i estimate them in yens :)
So In my opinion, your totoro worth minimum 200 000 yens . most famous scene of the movie + nice cel pose :)
The mononoke is not that rare actually, this entire scene is out ( i have already seen maybe 10 of them ) but you have indeed one of the best cel of the cut so i would say minimum 100 000 yens.
The nausicaa douga, i would say around 30 000 yens but i don't have such experience in douga so...

This is my opinion ;)

Just a lookback to economics 101 :D

The discussion of values all start with one simple question: What is something worth?

Today's most common answer is one of those answers that are so deceptively simple that it seems obvious when you know it. But then remember that it took economists more than a hundred years to figure it out: Something is worth whatever you think it is worth. In 1st century BC, Publilius Syrus wrote: "Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it".

I am sure I have a lot of pieces that I valued at a certain amount that I felt was worth it to me at the time that others would not have paid as much, guess that why I won that auction :cheers

Over the years as we have seen lots of people that have been disapointed with the prices offered or bid when trying to sell items from their collections. I never went into collecting expecting to create a "nest egg" to retire on. Like most we collect what makes us happy to look at and know we own that one of a kind image from of a favorite anime.
"Like the wind crying endlessly through the universe, Time carries away the names and the deeds of conquerors and commoners alike. And all that we are, all that remains, is in the memories of those who cared we came this way for a brief moment." Harlan Ellison

Hi guys!

Firstly I would like to say thank you to everyone who has offered ball park figures. It's always good to get an idea of a third party perspective as ones own can and will be biased, affected by sentiment and of course, what we paid to begin with, so thank you all for an objective take on prices.

Secondy I would like to say that I agree with what everyone has said. No matter what I think it's worth it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, it's just that as mentioned by a couple of people, what us collectors are willing to pay varies greatly from one site to another.

Funnily enough I am still waiting for the individual to get back to me. I think it's probably a sign that I again need to sit down and honestly consider what I want to do about my collection. I love my collection but don't often get the pleasure of having it as I find myself preoccupied with other things these days. I'm proud of my collection and worked hard for them but I am very much aware of the fact that I need to cut back on my belongings. (We will be moving later this year and I have started to de-clutter books and DVDs but I own more stuff than I realised!!)

I think that's my main issue right now, and maybe worrying about that is the driving force behind considering selling my "keepers"?
Well, we'll see if this guy ever gets back to me and in the meantime I will focus on getting rid of bulkier things.

Has anyone had that indecisive feeling or sold "keepers"? If you have, did you regret it or did it feel like one less worry?
