Should sketches be displayed separately?

Post by glorff »

I have been trying to figure out wether genga, douga, setti, etc should have a separate section in my gallery or be mixed in with the cels.
My inclination is that they look better separately so the subtilties of the sketches is not lost to the brightness of the cels.

Definitely separate. The artwork can be so different...especially if the artist has written/colored the sketch.

I chose that it doesn't matter to me, which it doesn't. I do not own any stand alone genga/douga sets, because I much prefer cels over sketches. But, I do like when a cel comes with a matching sketch, in which case I scan and upload it to display with the cel. :)

I don't frame my cels but I've liked the setups where I've seen the sketch next to the cel. In my gallery, I tend not to show the sketch if it came with the cel. I do really need to go back around and scan all the sketches that came with them. However, I think I'll end up putting it privately. I separated my sketch-only and cel galleries though because I liked the focus it gave on each and the differences between them. I also liked the general look of lots of color vs. a little to harmonize each page. I also wanted a slightly different gallery to play around with.

I don't frame the drawings, but I do keep them together with their matching cel in my cel book. Normally I have them behind the cel, so they aren't seen, but sometimes I get a really outstanding or rare type drawing (like my portrait of a blushing Washu-chan from Tenchi OAV) and I just have to display it side by side in my book along with the cel.

I see the sketches as accessories. If a cel comes with one, I bag it and put it behind the cel. On RS, I add an image of the sketch often, but I don't add it at all on my Tripod site.

I see them as seperate but equal :)
I enjoy the douga that comes with a cel just as
much as the cel itself. In my gallery I have a seperate
section just for douga and genga. After all they are the
foundation for the cels themselves

Unfortunately, I am a bit biased in that I favor cels far more, and though all of my cels come with sketches, I simply keep them tucked away behind my cels and out of sight...

I prefer the cels over sketches, when they come with the sketches, I usually separate them, I went to a scrapbook store and bought an acid free book to keep my sketches in, I'm in the process of framing all of my cels.
I haven't put any of the sketches on my RS site, but I'm about to redo it, so I might put them up :D

I'm another who looks at the cel more than the sketch, although I have some sketches that I like. But I'm too lazy and too webspace-deficient to scan my sketches.

However, when it comes to looking at other people's galleries I'm happy to look at whatever they display, and the different ways of organizing them just give each gallery a personality. So my advice would just be to trust your instincts and do what feels right for your gallery.

i've said this before but as far as framing fo i always like to get a double frame and put the sketch next to the cel, but as far as gallery goes i never put the sketches up simply for the fact i can never get good pictures of them to display, but i say they always look better when with the cel so keep them together if you can

I concur... I've always thought that it was "part" of the cel, as it were, and would frame the cel and sketch together.

I also display the matching Sketch/Douga with the Cel, and have a seperate section for my other Douga/Genga.

Separate but equal.
I've always preferred sketches over cels... or so I thougt.
But lately, it seems I will have to retract that statement.
I'll come back to this discussion in a few months.
