I didn't mean to offend anyone SW. I was just giving my opinion of what I thought of them. I didn't mean to sound harsh. I just don't like to mince words either.

Ok, well I didn't vote. This is a hard question for me to answer. Well about 8 mounths ago I purchased a Fushigi Yuugi Cel, that was a fan cel. I payed $60.00 dollars for it, but it is an over size cel. It is also the only one that I have ever purchased. I feel that if I want a fan cel I will probably attempt to make one myself. Oh, I also have a fan cel from the series Farscape, (because the real images were all done in the computer and I commissioned someone for it). I just had to have that scene. Check it out on my Rubberslug, if you like. :D

I didn't vote either

I didn't vote either.

Mostly because I don't buy cels period. I'd buy a fancel or a production cel if it was nice enough and I considered the price to be a better deal than painting it myself. I suppose an original fancel would be another matter, but come on, how many people do *ANYTHING* besides repros? not many...

Requiem,
Just spoke with the recepient of your Gally Hanken repro. He's very happy with it, as he should be. You did an excellent job.

I voted $31-$50. Someday I would like to have one made, if only I could decide on what I want it of. :P

It Depends on

Post by Nathan »

Let me know if anyone agrees -

Okay... I think it depends on why you are collecting...
If you are collecting purely to own a moment of the Series... then a fan cel would no appeal, it is not really from the show, it was not used etc...

When I had my first cel - I scanned my videos for the episode - and when I found it, there was much rejoicing, knowing what I had in my hand was not only a piece of art, but actually used to create what I was watching. That was cool!!! - A fan cel does not do that...

But if you are collecting for arts sake - well - a fan cel done beautifully can be just as appealing and a LOT cheaper. I have seen some beautiful fan cels of DBZ - they always look slightly different from the original drawn characters... but an artwork all on their own.

I know that this is a simple opinion, and there is a huge grey area -
But I believe that this is what it boils down to...

I don't collect Fan Cels - not because I dislike them (I happen to think most of them are astonishing - but not that trunks(with original purple hair) one on ebay)
I like the historical connection with owning a real cel, Owning a bit of what I love watching.... (awwwwwwww)
Anyone agree\disagree

:?:
...just one more

I agree with PK. And I think I would want to come up with the concept myself, which makes it very unlikley that I will come up with anything anytime soon.

Golden Boy-

Yeah I know ^_^ We're both hoping it goes through the mail ok, but I think I made it bulletproof. I think the only thing that's going to hurt this cel is if someone tried to stab it with a very sharp knife, and although the postal workers are nuts, they aren't THAT nuts...

I think I agree Nathan. Part of the problem is that being an artist (tho' not nearly in the same league as Requiem) I have a problem with buying someone else's art if I think I can do it for free myself. It's the same with clothing - I have trouble buying clothes that I know I can make at half the cost, which means I usually end up with nothing, because I don't have time to sew anymore!

And, yeah, besides that adrenaline rush of getting your cel in the mail, the next best rush is seeing your cel on the show. I just spotted my Goku FX cel on one of the last eps of DB and I nearly flew out of my chair!

There's just something to be said about having the original artwork - I like the fact that there's only one shot in existence - When I find a cel that is from one of my favorite scenes, I think 'wow, that cel was the actual artwork that was under that camera in the epsisode I watched and really enjoyed' With fancels I'd be trying to fool myself - Deep down it would eat at me that the original is out there..... somewhere....... laughing at me...... pointing at me........ mocking me........ saying 'nyah nyah! Nice copy there bud but remember.... You don't have me!' I agree with DBZMomma - a replica is a replica and anybody can do a replica if they tried - but that original.....ohhhhhh..... that's the one they're ALL trying to copy and no matter how hard they try, they can't perfectly match it. I'm thinking down the road I might ask somebody to draw me a fancel of a second layer (Bubbles) I'm missing on one of my favorite scenes where Goku is chasing Bubbles (just cause I figure it would be EXTREMELY hard to find that exact cel to complete the scene) - I figure since one of the layers is original, I can deal with the Bubbles one mocking me a little bit. WAH! :flushie

Yah, I will also have to agree. I collect because it is from the show and I love the show. If I deside to buy another fan cel it will be from a scene that I will never be able to find and one that I am not talented enough to draw and paint myself.

something you're missing though...

All of these are perfectly good arguments for not buying repros... but what about the OTHER kinds of fancels? (they do exist!)

Like I did a Slayers cel of Zelgadiss sleeping with his sword (in the anime you only see him sitting up in bed holding his sword) so it's not like it's a copy of any cel, it's kindof... an unseen scene?

I agree with you Requiem. Fancels of characters in scenes that don't exist, or an original character that's thought up is a good idea!! I think it's a great way to see my favorite anime character in a totally unique situation in clothes that he or she will never wear. It's also lets the artist demonstrate their full artistic talents! :P

Hmmm, now I have ideas bubbling around in my head....

Yep, that's exactly what I was talking about. Personally, I don't like exact scenes reproduced from a series. Now for that, I'd rather just hold my breath and hope I stumble into it at some point.

Personally, I've been kicking an idea around of having a cel of Vejita done, but in a different art style (more detail on the face and eyes, not quite so blocky, muscular) Mmmm.. it's actually a lot of fun thinking about the possibilities.

I agree - I wouldn't want a repro. If I had a fan cel done it would be an original idea, not a copy of something I couldn't get. I think there would be a comprable level of satisfaction in knowing that the image you have a fan cel of is one you created on your own vs the excitement that you get in seeing your original cel in action in the show itself.

Requiem - do more people request repros, their own ideas, or just give you guidelines of what they want and let you come up with the details?
