I agree, Meier is much more of a victim. Constantly having to defend
himself from the attacks of D, Carmilla and the Markus Brothers. This
entire movie is filled with victims. Meier is hunted for what he is and
cannot have what he wants. Charlotte is cast out from normal society
for loving a vampire. Charlotte's family merely wish to recover their
loved one, assuming she has been kidnapped against her will.
Leila lost her family to vampires and has no one in her life to love or
love her (this is resolved at the end of the film). D is also not accepted
by either humans or monsters because he is both and seems unable to escape his heritage (as evidenced by Carmilla's attacks and the events
at the horse stable). The Markus Brothers are just trying to help society
and make a living, but are brutally killed in front of each other.
None of these events would been set into motion if it had not been
for the conventions of "normal" society.
Leave it to HotIce to come up with a great post
