Yeah, Anime lost most of its gore after the 80s to mid nineties. You can tell just by comparing the new “Guyver” TV series to the early nineties OAV, or Koichi Ohata’s “Genocyber,” or “MD Geist,” to his newer projects like “Burst Angel.”

Now when a guy gets shot in the head, it’s a bullet with some blood, but in the 80’s, it would go slow motion, you’d get a close up, followed by an X-ray shot of the bullet going through the guy’s head into his brain, and then it would be a shot of the back of his head exploding. A lot of scenes had additional gratuitous gore, like the exploded vampire coming back together in the 3rd “Cyber City” OAV (musculature slowly forms around a migrating eyeball.)

A man falls after taking a punch from Freeman.

That's hilarious....very visual 8O .....Awesome.

Alright....

I've seen Tenjou Tenge....great fight scenes.....loved the series....with the exception that what seemed to be the main story line was lacking a bit....don't wanna give anything away for people that haven't seen it yet. But I would definitely recommened it anyways.

Gantz along the same line as Elfen Lied? Wow....now I'm really looking forward to it. I just loved that series.....one of the best I've seen yet. Great style, awesome storyline and plenty of fights and gore for everyone.

So, Gantz, Dead Leaves, Speed Grapher, and Amon have made the list for the time being.....I need to grab a bunch more series names for the future reference cause I don't wanna bother you guys again since you've had to deal with the same type of questions multiple times.

So keep the suggestions coming....

By the way....has anyone seen Violence Jack? Is it along the same lines as Hokuto no ken or are we talking crazier?

Hopefully, this sounds like what you like then. Here's a Gantz review:

Violence Jack is more like Hokuto no Ken....minus the Hokuto brothers, minus the Nanto warriors, minus Yuria. All you got left is all the sucky people causing violence. Thats how I remember the series.

I'm surprised no one has said Golga 13.... and I personally didnt find Genocyber interesting, it seems like someone is always getting blown up or torn apart. Another one that's kinda gorey would be L.I.L.Y. Cat. I've seen alot of gorey anime but not alot is coming to mind.
Don't touch me, but I need a hug.

You seemed to only be looking for series when you first asked, but now that your considering Dead Leaves I'll weigh in. :P
Although it really isn't a bloodfest per se, G13 definitely crossed my mind when thinking of older violent OVAs. Another one that doesn't appear on your list is Battle Angel. Although a little harder to find (thanx to Cameron) it's definitely worth a look, as well as one from an even earlier period - Neo-Tokyo's "The Running Man". Neo-Tokyo (or Manie Manie) is a 3 story OVA similar to Robot Carnival and Memories (you know , those Nuart art house cinema releases that come and go in a week :roll).
Prince Vegeta wrote:I've heard alot about Neon Genesis Evangelion and it being an awesome series, but no one ever mentioned anything about it being bloody and gory so that's a bit strange ms. poe :? So maybe I'll check out an episode of that and see how it goes.
Oh yeah, NGE's plenty violent - just give it a chance. Then again, so is Akira. You have seen Akira, haven't you? Image

Btw, if you haven't already seen Blood, The Last Vampire you might want to check that out before committing to Blood+, just to see what your getting into.

hehehe....all the sucky people indeed my friend.

ok. Soooo blood the last vampire, G13 and Battle Angel have been added to the list.

LILY cat didn't seem to have a story line at all....it was just mass killing by the thing (don't wanna give anything away....just in case).

Neo-Tokyo will be a challenge to get a hold of, but I'll also put that on the list along with memories.....I've been wanting to check out memories for a while now. Heard a lot of good opinions about it.

And of course, I've already seen Akira :)

I'll toss this into the list. Peacemaker. I'm about half way through the disks for this show. It has some good slashing scenes. It is the story from the other side (group) in Rurouni Kenshin or Samurai X story. The artwork is better than the Kenshin TV series IMHO. The show has as much comedy as the Kenshin show.
Personally, I find the artwork almost as good as the Kenshin OAVs for something done in CG.

Hope this helps.

Tokko could end up being pretty violent, but unfortunately the series just starting airing.

Well, besides the already mentioned Berserk, Akira, L.I.L.Y. Cat and Darkside Blues, I recall one of the Tenchi Muyo movies being a little violent; there was a mutilated body scene that was hastened and edited for the Sci-Fi Channel showing. When I first saw Vampire Hunter D and Ghost in the Shell I thought they were a little "much" (but I was a lot younger then)...

I only sat through a single episode, but I think Project ARMS may eventually have become violent, possibly gory. It was a very heavy, dark animation style, and the characters were all really psycho looking. If you'd care to give it a try, I'm selling my DVD boxset here. (Sorry, shameless plug!)

I agree that most of the older titles were more for adult viewing. These days it seems that brightly colored "pretty boy" anime reign the market, due to the vast amounts of screaming teenage fangirls, I suppose. *shrugs*

Sorry, I guess I'm not much help. I keep trying to think of all the anime I've seen over the years, but I cannot remember if they were genuinely bloody. Blue Seed and B't X reminded me of YYH, so I guess if you enjoyed that you may want to check those out. What about Animatrix or 3x3 Eyes? I know I've seen them, but I can't tell you anything about 'em... X|

Heehee, well, it's been a while since I've seen the series, but Gantz is certainly anything but a comedy. It's the most violent anime series I've seen thus far, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It may take an episode or two for the story to start going but it shouldn't take long for the gore to appear. heh Then again...
Didn't the two main characters get run over by a train and had their heads go flying off in the first eps? Isn't that gore? lol Such a great way for a series to begin!!!

So another update for Peace Maker Kurogane now that I've seen all of it. Buy the first and last DVD, they have all the blood and violence. The others #2 - #6 are just filler.

As for Gantz, I was shocked by some of the violence/gore. This is one to re-visit on your list!
When the God threw the acid at Kei & Kato and it eats through her back... Yuck! X|
Thankfully the anime has great J-pop music! :P
